The first appointment with the Palio di Siena 2022 begins today, Wednesday 29 July. A week full of history and traditions, of colored flags and processions throughout the city.
Surely Siena is a city that can be appreciated in all its facets every day of the year, it is a UNESCO heritage site and is always wonderful.
But in the days of the Palio it lights up in a unique way. It is an event that involves the whole community, for which every citizen (and not only) manifests a feeling that can only be understood by living it, impossible to describe.
The focus of these days is the "career", a minute and twenty seconds of horse racing, behind which, however, there are the 17 districts who work all year to be able to triumph.
And for the Sienese the Contrada is not just a territory: it is a flag, a people, a seat, their homeland. Being a contradaiolo is like nationality, it is not a choice, but a duty and a right that last for a lifetime. Those born in the territory of the district will be part of it even if over the years they have to move to the territory of another district. Only those who come "from outside" can choose a district out of sympathy and participate in the palio under that flag.
These premises say a lot about why the Palio is such a heartfelt event, so famous and known by everyone, even abroad.
Have you ever seen Siena in this period? Do you know what the 17 Contrade are?
